The Greensboro Science Center will have a Sensory Friendly Night on Thursday. It’s an evening dedicated to “science for all” and creating an inclusive and accessible environment. The night is designed for guests of all ages with sensory-related challenges such as autism spectrum disorder or PTSD. There will be special stations, volunteers, and activity areas, including rooms where people can sit and take a break while exploring the exhibits. The Greensboro Science Center always has items to borrow on any given day to help create a sensory-friendly experience, like headphones and other items guests can fidget with during the visit. However, leaders of the Greensboro Science Center wanted to take it a step further.“We realize there is a need in the community to look at how people learn, how they visit institutions like us, and we wanted to accommodate that on every level,” Martha Regester, the Vice President of Education at the Greensboro Science Center, said. WXII 12 News also spoke with a father who visits the Greensboro Science Center regularly with his son. Ben Pieper said his son has already benefitted from all that the institution has to offer and shared what it means to have events like a sensory-friendly night planned for his young son and others. “He’s been diagnosed with sensory processing disorder. And just the things he is able to do here and just the social interactions is good for him, but also he just loves coming here. He just loves stuff that stimulates his senses,” Pieper said. The event is planned for 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday. Tickets are $5 per person for guests ages 3 and older and admission is free for members.
